UPDATE 12.4.22

The Board of Waikari Health Care Limited has opted to fund the Fluad Quad vaccine for people over 65 who choose to have it. If you have paid to have this vaccine your account at the Health Centre will be credited.

This year there is a choice of 2 vaccines for people over 65 – one is funded and the other is not. Details of the unfunded vaccine below. Cost is $30.

For people aged 65 years old or over, influenza immunisation is very important, as the risks associated with the illness get more serious as you age.
The risk of hospitalisation, long-term disability, loss of independence and even death are all greater if you get the flu compared to a younger, healthy adult.
The influenza vaccine specifically designed for over 65s
You may be aware that the effectiveness of the flu vaccine decreases as you get older and your immune system becomes weaker. However, recent advances in influenza vaccine development at Seqirus have given the flu shot a boost in effectiveness in people aged 65 years old and over compared with standard influenza vaccines.
Aged 65 or over?
Read this important news about your annual flu vaccine.
FLUAD Quad optimised for 65+
FLUAD® Quad is the only flu vaccine containing MF59® Adjuvant, designed to help your body create
more antibodies to help fight influenza. In people aged 65 years and over, immunisation with FLUAD Quad offers:
Lower risk of needing to see a doctor, visit an emergency department or be hospitalised
with flu related complications compared with the standard flu vaccine† Longer protection Antibody levels are higher at 12 months post vaccination, compared with the standard flu vaccine† Less chance of contracting flu compared with the standard flu vaccine†
FLUAD Quad is made by Seqirus, the same company that
makes the standard flu vaccine.
Any questions? Talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist
about FLUAD Quad today or go to fluad.co.nz

As before, we are open for business, but it is critical, when phoning for an appointment, that patients inform the receptionist if they have any respiratory symptoms – new or worsening cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, sneezing and runny nose, loss of sense of smell or altered sense of taste, or a fever. It is also essential that you advise if you have any other risk factors including travel from a Level 4 area, contact with someone who has travelled from a Level 4 area, work at a border facility etc.

While it is still preferable to provide as many consultations as possible via the phone or video, if you do need a face to face consultation then we respectfully ask that you come alone as we have a limited space for people in the waiting room, to ensure a 2m distance from others.

All people aged 12 and over entering our facility must wear a face covering and must either use the Covid app to record the visit or sign in. Please also use the hand sanitiser dispenser in the foyer, on entry and departure.

Covid vaccination clinics will continue to be delivered as a “drive through” arrangement. These are done by booked appointments only – please phone our receptionist on 03 3144 506.

All of the above measures are to keep patients, staff and the community as safe as possible. Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Canterbury’s COVID-19 Vaccination Programme – update

We’ve had lots of questions about the COVID-19 vaccination and when you’ll be able to access it, so here’s an update.

In Waitaha/Canterbury we’re currently vaccinating people in Group 1, Group 2 and a small number of people in Group 3.

Group 1 includes border and MIQ workers and their household contacts.

Group 2 includes frontline health workers, people working and living in long-term residential care, Māori and Pacific people aged 70 and over, the people they live with and their carers.

Group 3 includes people aged 65 and over, people with some underlying health conditions, pregnant people, and people with disabilities, older Māori and Pacific people, the people they live with and their carers.

There are more than 170,000 people in Group 3 in Canterbury. Because of this, we’re inviting people to book their vaccination appointments in stages.

We’re pleased to say we’re opening a vaccination clinic at Waikari Health Centre.

When it is your turn to book an appointment, we’ll contact you directly with instructions about how to book. This will be by text, email, letter or phone call.

If you’re in Group 3 and you haven’t been contacted to book your vaccination, you don’t need to do anything right now. We’ll contact you when it’s your turn. Please be patient.

Note that you need 2 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. These are given at least 21 days apart. This means you will need to either have your flu vaccination 2 weeks before your first Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine or 2 weeks after your second Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

It is still important to have the flu vaccine. The flu is a serious illness that causes hundreds of deaths each winter in New Zealand, and thousands of hospital admissions and doctor’s visits.

In the meantime, you can find out more about the vaccination programme, the vaccine, and about which group you’re in here: vaccinatecanterburywestcoast.nz
